Lions Gambia Appeal, which was launched in August 2016 by a British couple Mike
and Brigid Hendy to support the community of Gunjur Kunkujang with clean
drinking water, medical items, school materials among others, continued to
support the community and school with various projects.
The latest generosity the couple brought to the community during their March visit was the purchasing and installation of 15 ceiling fans for the community’s lower basic school, which was donated by Coningsby and Tattersall Lions Club in UK.
During their visit, the couple also confirmed the provision of a health and well-being immunisation clinic to be conducted in the community every two weeks. They have also constructed 4 classrooms and an office and a store at the community’s school, which is expected to be, completed this November.
The couple first visited The Gambia on holiday in January 2016 during which they meet with an old friend Kebba Cham, who they had known when he was studying and living in the U.K.
In November 2016, the couple donated 65kgs of basic school supplies to the community’s lower basic school and in May 2017, 10 locally made desks were handed to the school.
In February 2018, the designed and constructed towers and ancillary equipment of the water project at the village was inaugurated. Besides the supply of other items, they also supported the school with refurbished laptops, a printer, camera and a projector.
In September 2018, the couple donated a 20 foot container of second hand clothes, five beds and mattresses to the school and community through Tenerife Sur Lions Club in the Canary Islands and in April 2019, they sent a 40ft container full of clothes to be distributed in The Gambia.
According to Mike, their next project would be to provide solar power to the community’s nursery school, saying they have furnished a staff room for teachers to be able to prepare lessons comfortably.
