BIBLICAL REFLECTIONS: MAKING CHOICES

Wednesday, May 30, 2018

Throughout life we are called to make choices, I daresay we are obliged to make them. Even on a daily basis we make choices about where to live, what to wear or what to eat. We choose our friends, our professions and our spouses. God has given us the ability not only to choose but to make the right choices.

God does not determine our choices. He lays the options before us and gives us the liberty to decide. We must know full well that the choices we make have consequences – good or bad. Moses warned the Children of Israel speaking on God’s behalf: “This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19-20) The option here is between ‘life and death’ and God is prompting us to choose the former.

To a large extent, we are responsible for what we become by the choices we make. The Children of Israel were a stubborn lot that were easily lured by the evil one to disobey God. They were very much governed by their flesh after a four hundred and thirty year sojourn in Egypt. They had grown into the habit of worshipping idols –because that was all they knew anyway. When push came to shove, Joshua warned them strongly: “But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve....But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)

To be reading this script should either mean you are seeking the truth with a view to making a choice; probably you still have some unanswered questions that are challenging your faith. If however you have already made up your mind to be on the Lord’s side, to worship Him in spirit and in truth -- with all your heart and with all your strength and with all our mind, then rest assured that because you have decided to stick with the Great God, Jehovah each time you call upon His name in praise He will come down and dwell in [sits in] our worship of Him. (Psalm 22:3)

In this present world clear lines have been drawn regarding which camp we have chosen. The prince of this world, the deceiver is busy offering diverse options to his victims, those who have fallen prey to this world’s pleasures. We are constantly reminded however that Satan’s way is like a dead end street where we will walk headlong into a wall. The devil has put a blindfold on all of his victims to the extent that they find pleasure in sin and consider the worship of the true God boring. There is only one sensible choice we can make and that is to be on God’s side because that is the only way that would last. It is a way that has been tried and has proven its ‘roadworthiness.’ “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit and they are life.” (John 6:63)

Moses made it absolutely clear to the Children of Israel that there could be no wavering; either they chose to live or to die. No straddling between two camps. Our decision to belong has to be definitive. We are either the agents of Satan or the Children of God; which in concrete terms tantamount to curses or blessings. Death was brought to this world by Satan and he was the one God cursed.

God knows those who are His.

Our Lord Jesus rebuked those who would be saying to Him ‘Lord! Lord!’ when they were not living according to His will. “Not everyone that says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles.’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me you evil doers!’“ (Matthew 7:21-23)

We can still make amends while we have breath. It is not too late. There is still a ray of hope for anyone reading this article to return to the Lord and live in righteousness. God has given us unlimited possibilities to identify with Him. Satan is engaged in an all-out war in a bid to take with him as many souls to hell, ‘where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ Hell was created for Satan and his cohorts as his eternal dwelling place, not for humans.

God does not like people who waver, who cannot make up their minds. The Bible teaches that we are either hot or cold. “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” (Revelation 3:15-16) May this not be our portion as we continue to work in the Master’s vineyard! Amen!  Are you on the Lord’s side? Choose life and Live!
