management needs to respond to challenges to maintain quality education in the
Madam Cole made these remarks in her opening statement at Atlantic Hotel on Tuesday while addressing participants at a two day capacity building workshop organised by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) for board chairpersons, Mission Education Secretaries, Principals of Schools and Regional Directors.
Proper school management is vital as it enhances better performance more so at a time when Gambians decry the poor performance in the just released 2018 West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Exams (WASSCE) results.
The Basic and Secondary minister said there needs to be an immediate response and that the workshop is timely.
“In recognition of the present situation and although efforts have been made to improve the management of schools, challenges are still glaring and need immediate response,” the minister said.
“We at the ministry believe that to maintain quality in education with increased access and improved performance in place, a good management system is sine qua non in this process”
The MoBSE minister said the Board members of Senior Secondary Schools constitute a critical mass and hold a crucial position in the education system chain.
She said such capacity building coupled with continuous monitoring and supervision, as well as communication flow, the management of schools would improve and contribute to building the education system in The Gambia.
Madam Cole emphasized the importance of the capacity building workshop saying that the 2016 education policy states that prominence will be given to capacity building for sector management to enhance the performance of the education sector through organizational structure and decentralization, policy and planning, financial management, monitoring and evaluation.
The two day capacity building will be centered on Human Resources Issues, Labour laws and Legal matters, General Orders and many others to acquaint the participants with the above mentioned areas.
