Youth and Sports Association Nawettan defending champions Kairaba FC were on
Saturday held to a goalless draw by debutants DHQ (Defense Head Quarters) Camp
FC in the opening game of the committee’s 2019 tournament played at the
Barbilon football field.
The keenly and well-contested encounter was graced by Star GSM Proprietor Lamin Kabba, officials of Barrow Youth Movement, Gambia Football Federation officials among other dignitaries and hundreds of football fans.
Speaking to reporters shortly after the game, Sadibou Colley head coach of DHQ Camp FC said for a start collecting a point was not bad, adding that he rested most of his star players because they were meant to play another game the following day at Lamin.
Coach Colley noted that he will work with his players on their finishing to ensure they score goals and secure a win in their next encounter. He highlighted that their target is to reach the final of the competition.
Ousman Sarr, Kairaba FC head coach admitted that scoring was their weakness despite creating a number of chances during the game, saying they will be fully ready for their next match to collect the maximum points.
Sarr who led Kairaba FC to the title last year without suffering defeat stated that their aim is to defend their crown.
Musa Ndow, Secretary General of the Barbilon Youth and Sports Association said the competition is organised to promote unity, bring young people together as well as promote and develop grassroots football.
He added that nine of the teams competing in the tournament are from the nine ‘kabilos’ within Barbilon, noting that due to last year’s success this year they have addition four teams within the area who joined the competition.
SG Ndow remarked that winner of this year’s tournament will be rewarded with a trophy and a cash prize of D12, 000 while runners-up will pocket home D6, 000 among other consolation prizes for deserving individuals and teams. He expressed gratitude and thanks to dignitaries for honoring their invitation.
Lamin Kabba, Star GSM CEO and Proprietor promised to give a flat screen television to first goal scorer of the final and a mobile phone to the second goal scorer. He also promised to sponsor ten people from Barbilon further their education.
