Banjul hosts 1st Senegalo-Gambia Ministerial meeting

Tuesday, March 13, 2018

The Gambia has hosted the first Senegalo-Gambia ministerial meeting which ended yesterday at Kairaba Beach Hotel in Kololi.  It will be also hosting the two nations’ first Presidential Council Meeting today. Another meeting of experts was concluded on Sunday.

The idea of establishing the Presidential Council was first conceived during the visit of President Adama Barrow to Senegal from March 2-4, 2017. During the visit, the two leaders elevated their two countries’ bilateral relations to a level of strategic partnerships, by setting up a medium for the periodic review of bilateral agreements every six months.

Delivering a statement at the ministerial meeting yesterday, Gambia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ousainou Darboe, said the forum is an opportunity for them to review and identify not only the successes achieved, but also the challenges or constraints encountered in the implementation of some of the series of decision and agreements reached during Barrow’s visit to Dakar.

“The experts’ session that took place yesterday had done a good job of examining all issues of bilateral interest and providing guidance to the two governments towards deepening our bilateral cooperation.”

The Foreign Affairs minister added that The Gambia and Senegal are two countries but one people sharing commonalities and the same destiny. In this regard, he said, there is no better way to strengthen the good relations and deepen cooperation than giving priority to periodic consultations.

“It is our common responsibility to lead the development of the region, bearing in mind that there is need for a strong commitment in promoting peaceful co-existence, good neighborliness and brotherly relations, based on mutual respect and trust,” he said.

The Senegalese Foreign Affairs, Sidiki Kaba, spoke at length on the significance of the forum, while commending President Barrow and President Macky Sall for their extraordinary leadership for coming out with such a laudable initiative.

He calls for the need to see the two leaders as models in cementing the already relationship and cooperation that exist between the two nations. “We will do everything possible in ensuring that the Senegalo-Gambia become a reality in the interest of both countries.”
