Foni Bajana International Marathon organisers have the scheduled the 6th
edition of the event to 31st March at Bajana village with international
delegates expected to participate.
This was revealed to the Point by the event’s vice chairman Molamin Jatta during a press conference held at the Semeka Janneh Hall in Tallinding, calling the event as Gambia’s most famous and popular marathon since 2013.
He said this year; athletes will run a 42km distance instead of the normal 21km in previous years. “There will also be a 5km race for the young ones starting from Besse, 10km for institutions and media houses starting at Somita and 42km starting at Busumbala market which will all end in Bajana.”
He further highlighted that registration for individual is D100, Institutions D1, 500 and Embassies D2, 000. All registration forms are to be collected at some of their member residents in Latri kunda Sabiji, Tallinding, Sukuta Brufut and Brikama. “We will be responsible for food, water and transportation and most interestingly, there will be medals, trophies and cash prizes for winners. Winner of the 42km will choose any marathon competition in the world and we will facilitate their going there,” He said.Mr. Jatta emphasised that the international marathon is a non-profitable organisation that is trying to complement government efforts in sport, saying they always find it difficult get sponsorship but with the support of the British Embassy, Gamtel/Gamcel, GT Board, Gambia Experience, Gambia Ports Authority (GPA), Banjul Breweries limited, West Coast Governor’s office, MS printing and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, they are able to conduct the event.
