Area Council (BAC) chairman, Sheriffo Sonko, has denounced reports suggesting
that his council had signed a deal with the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC)
for a possible relocation of the Bakoteh dump site to identified places within
West Coast Region.
The suggestions came following the ongoing talks within the alleged communities identified for the proposed relocation of Bakoteh main dumping site.
Mr. Sonko told this reporter that Brikama Area Council has never in any circumstance signed a document with the Kanifing Municipality that would give access for a possible relocation of the Bakoteh dumpsite to some identified communities within the country’s biggest region.
He then further confirmed that the two proposed dumping sites of “Tambana” in Brikama including the old quarry located between Sanyang and Jambanjelly all within the West Coast Region were identified by central government to be utilized as a dumping site by Brikama Area Council, Kanifing Municipal Council and the Banjul City Council.
These efforts came after the government had made efforts in introducing both councils to Istanbul Cosmopolitan Municipality in Turkey for modern management of the identified dump sites.
“To inform you that Brikama Area Council has signed a deal with Kanifing Municipal Council for a possible relocation of Bakoteh dump site in West Coast Region is something that is not true,” he countered. “Yes, we had an MOU with KMC but that does not even include the issue of Bakoteh dump site and besides we do not have the mandate to close the Bakoteh dump site.”
What is clear for now is that there are two identified sites by central government in West Coast Region that are proposed to be used as a dumping sites by BAC, KMC and the BCC and even these locations; I can tell you are not going to be utilized until it is rightfully managed and ready for any waste dumping activities that will not harm the environment. “We have seen what is happening with the Bakoteh dumping site so we are not going to allow such to occur in West Coast Region,” he said.
