Arrested Gambian journalist beaten by PIU personnel

Pa Modou Bojang, a journalist and presenter at Mengbekering, an online TV, who was detained by personnel of Police Intervention Unit (PIU) at the Brikama Police Station was beaten during which he sustained injuries on his head, The Point can confirmed.

Bojang was reportedly arrested by PIU while covering the Monday incident at Faraba Bantang in the Kombo East District, which led to the killing of two people, with nine other sustaining injuries.

Journalist Bojang was briefly detained at the Brikama Police Station, before he was finally released on the orders of the police high command. However, the circumstance which led to his arrest could not be established at the time of gathering the report.

Our reporter, who visited the Brikama Police Station together with other journalists were denied access to see their colleague by police personnel on duty.

Our reporter said they were told by men on duty to contact the station officer, who later referred them to the spokesperson of The Gambia Police, David Kujabi.

All efforts to reach the Police PRO at the time of gathering this report proved futile.
