Gambia College Students and University of The Gambia Animal welfare advocates,
in partnership with various development partners, recently joined the rest of
the world to celebrate Animal Welfare Day in a grand style.
Speaking at the commemoration ceremony, the national coordinator at the UTG Vet United, Dr. Kebba Daffeh,said UTG and Gambia College students’ animals welfare advocates were commemorating two important events:the World Rabies Day and the World Animal Day.
The celebration was organised by the animal welfare students of the UTG and Gambia College advocates, with technical assistance from Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust.
According to Dr. Daffeh, the objective of the event was to raise awareness on Animal welfare in The Gambia.
He said animal welfare is very important in The Gambia, adding that it has been neglected over the years. He said the event was meant to draw the attention of the people to its values.
He also said the objective was to reflect on the diversity of the different species of animals in the world.
Dr. Daffeh also commended the students of the College and UTG, as well as other stakeholders of various departments, such as the Departments of Park and Life, and Livestock Services, Gambia Experience and various schools for making the event a success story.
He said they are doing a lot towards animal welfare, such as offering curriculum at the UTG and Gambia College campus, with a view to making animal welfare becomes a reality in The Gambia.
He also highlighted some of the challenges facing animal welfare, such as the lack of awareness, adding that the promotion of animal welfare callsfor all and sundry.
Also speaking, Lamba Ceesay, deputy director of the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust expressed appreciation for celebrating this very important event on animal welfare.
He said the celebration was a step in the right direction, as it was geared towards the promotion of animal welfare in The Gambia.
