Alleged Rape victim testifies in court

A lady (name withheld), Tuesday testified as 4th prosecution witness in the criminal trial involving the State against one Babucarr Darboe before Justice Ebrima Jaiteh of High Court in Banjul.

Babucarr Darboe is standing trial on two counts of rape and assault contrary to the laws of The Gambia. Prosecution alleged that on the 15th September, 2015 at Faraba Bantang Village in West Coast Region, the accused had unlawful carnal intercourse with the alleged victim without her consent.

It also alleged that the accused on the same date and place assaulted the alleged victim by holding and compressing her by the neck.

The alleged victim told the court that the accused person forcefully had sexual intercourse with her multiple times without her consent.

She also said the first time the accused had sexual intercourse with her, she refused but the accused threatened that he would kill her and he forcefully had sex with her after compressing her by the neck.

The witness testified that the first time the accused had sex with her, blood oozed from her vagina and the alleged incident happened in the afternoon.

She further testified that the second time happened during the Ramadan in the evening when her mother left for night prayers and thereafter the accused continued having sex with her.

The witness told the court that she was betrothed to a man whom she never had sexual intercourse with and after she became pregnant, she paid a visit to her husband who noticed she was pregnant. She said the husband refused to sleep with her and sent her home.
