Akwa Utd eliminates Hawks in Confederations Cup despite 1st leg conquer

Nigerian premier league leaders Akwa United has eliminated Gambia’s league champions Hawks in the 2018 CAF Confederations cup despite their first leg narrow defeat to The Gambian side in the first leg in Uyo.

The run way Nigerian league leaders lost to Hawks 2-1 in the continent’s second tier football club competition a week ago in Nigeria. Akwa United needed to score two goals without Hawks reply to advance to the second round after their slender first leg defeat.

They made no mistakes and notched in two goals to eliminate Hawks in front of their admirers to advance to the second round despite their 2-1 first leg defeat to Gambia’s FF cup champions.

Hawks re-acted quickly for an equaliser but could not penetrate Akwa United’s formidable defence line ending the game 2-0 in favour of Awka United.

The victory has earned Awka United a place in the second round of the 2018 CAF Confederations cup after their hard fought 3-2 aggregate win over Hawks. The defeat saw Hawks out of the 2018 CAF Confederations cup after losing to Akwa United 3-2 on aggregate in the preliminaries.
