A senior government official who spoke to The Point on the condition of anonymity has revealed that it was the Attorney General Chambers that recommended the prosecution of Gunjur youth activists and not The Gambia Police Force (GPF).

“The Attorney General Chambers recommended for the prosecution of the Gunjur youth activists in connection with the removal of Golden Lead factory’s waste pipe that is allegedly releasing toxic waste into the Gunjur sea,” our source said.

The Gunjur environment activists are charged with incitement of violence, criminal trespass and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Our source added that the investigation was conducted by the police with regard to the matter, saying, “the police were enthusiastic of charging the youth and sought advice from the Attorney General and Minister of Justice as what to do with the suspects. The AG Chamber wrote back to the police and advised them to charge them.”

The multitude of Gambians once again denounces these outrageous action of the government and called for an immediate end to the persecution of peaceful youth environment activists, and citizens. “We call on the government to drop all charges against Gunjur youths and release them immediately,” our source said.
