Adieu Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara!

Friday, August 30, 2019

It is an inevitable fact that every soul must one day or the other exit our world. It is also a stark truth that each and everyone will be remembered for his/her contributions in the progress of our societies.

As famously put by US professor Morris S. Schwartz-‘death ends a life, not a relationship. All the love you created is still there. All the memories are still there. You live on- in the hearts of everyone you have touched and nurtured while you were here’.

On a drizzly Thursday afternoon, hundreds of mourners gathered at a solemn ceremony held the National Assembly complex, to pay their last respects to Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, who was credited for his leadership virtues. He died on Tuesday at the age of 95.

Certainly, the demise of Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara not only closed a chapter in our history, it has also created a vacuum that can hardly be filled.

Those who had the opportunity to live and work with him, spoke highly of him as a humble, tolerance, environmentalist and caring man and an honest social figure. Even though he is gone, his services to The Gambia, Africa and the world at large will never be forgotten. Gambians will continue to remember him and will continue to be grateful to him for his immense contributions to the development of our great nation.

As stated by speaker-after-speaker, his respect for rule of law, tolerance, democratic principles and freedom to express oneself, are some of the virtues that he will be best remembered for.

The late Sir Dawda K. Jawara was a man of the highest character and the best leader every country could wish for. His extensive rich career resume from veterinary discipline to public office (from Prime Minister to president), has been exemplary.

As a charismatic and visionary leader, Sir Dawda K Jawara uses his vast expertise, tactics and ingenuity even at the height volatile conflicts in Liberia and other regions, to lead peaceful mediation efforts to bring about lasting peace that West African nation. And the list goes on.

As the nation mourns your death, we pray that the Almighty Allah grants you and all the others who passed onto the land of the silent fathers, his bountiful blessings and peaceful rest. May God in His infinite mercy also continue to guide and protect your family, friends, relatives and loved ones.

“It’s time to say goodbye, but I think goodbyes are sad and I’d much rather say hello. Hello to a new adventure.”
