The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) has announced that as part of activities making the 50th anniversary of nationhood, it has been delegated the responsibility of staging a three-day regional football showpiece under the banner of the Zonal Championships.

The championship which kicks off on Saturday 28th February and conclude on Monday 2nd March would be competed for by all the seven regions across the country, announced a GFF media release.

Three playing venues (Serrekunda East, West and Brikama) have been identified for the tournament, that will see the finals of the championship being played at the Box Bar Mini Stadium in Brikama on Monday 2nd March 2015.

The local organizing committee for the events has, therefore, sanctioned that the championship is strictly for non-league players, and thus no 1st and 2nd Division players will take part in the Jubilee Football Jamboree, added the release.

The draw for the championship took place on Wednesday 25th February 2015 at the National Sports Council head office at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

Therefore, all matches in the Division One First Eco Partners Football League Week 11 and all other sanctioned GFF matches are called off until further notice, in observance of the said championship to commemorate the nation’s 50th independence anniversary, the release added.

“The Gambia Football Federation, therefore, solicits the support and co-operation of the general public during this period in order to achieve another resounding glory.”

The GFF took the opportunity to thank its chief patron, President Yahya Jammeh, “for the support and immense contribution extended to Gambian Football development through the Ministry of Youth and Sport under the stewardship of Hon Alieu K Jammeh.”

“While thanking the general public for their show of support and loyalty, do accept our warmest sportive felicitations and happy celebrations”, the release concluded.
