4 NAWEC staff, 2 others arrested for fuel theft

Police in the Central River Region town of Bansang have arrested four staff of the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) and two others for stealing 10 gallons of 20 liters of gas oil, The Point has been reliably informed.

The suspects: Ismaila Sanyang, Modou Lamin Kanteh, Bakary Dampha and Sosseh Fofana were arrested alongside – Yahya Fatty and Keikuta Jobe, a taxi driver in Bansang.

They were detained at the Bansang Police Stations as investigation into the matter deepens. When the news broke out, people in this growing settlement, who spoke to our reporter, condemned the act. However, they attributed the act to be the main contributor to power failure in the said town.

When contacted, Pierre Sylva, the spokesperson of NAWEC, said he is not yet aware of the development. He said: “However, I have contacted the line department head to make some inquiries. When we get the necessary information we will communicate to you.”

The public relations officer (PRO) of The Gambia Police Force, David Kujabi has confirmed the development to our reporter.

The suspects, he added, have been granted bail and the matter is still under investigation.

It could be recalled that last year, some staff of NAWEC in Bansang were arrested for stealing fuel in Sare Mansong village in the Jimara District of URR.
