3 men save Belgians from drawing at Kasumeh beach

Two Coco Ocean hotel staff and a juice presser at Kasumeh hotel in Bijilo have saved the lives of three Belgian nationals when they nearly drowned at Kasumeh beach while they were swimming on Monday.

Alieu Mbenga 26 and Buba Sidibeh 21, lifeguards at Coco Ocean and Modou Saidy, a juice presser at Kasumeh hotel, responded quickly and saved the lives of Mina Brookaert, Robin Cloots and Lotte Kinds.

Rita Vancoillie, president of CONTANO NGO (Happiness); a URR-based organisation celebrated the effort of the three young men.

She said the three Belgians, with other colleagues were in the country on a three-month intensive programme at Basse Health Center and were given six days working leave, which brought them to the Kombos and were staying at Paradise suites hotel.

 “Unfortunately, the first day they arrived from Basse, five of them went to the river side and Mina, Robin and Lotte decided to go for swimming,” she explained.

She commended the three men for saving her friends’ lives and appealed to the management of both Kasumeh and Sunbird beach to put red flags and lifeguards in their side of the river.

Explaining how they were able to rescue the three Belgian nationals, Alieu Mbenga said they were around Kasumeh beach side and closely monitoring the three Belgians when they were swimming.

“After rescuing them, we kept them at recovery position before taking them to Medicare Clinic at Brufut turntable junction, where they spent three days before being discharged on Wednesday,” Mbenga said.
