Barrow Kunda Lower Basic school to have a wall

africa » gambia
Wednesday, March 26, 2008
The cluster monitor for Wuli West Mr. Yunusa Manneh, on behalf of the Governor of Upper River Region Alhagie Omar Khan, recently laid the foundation stone for a 1360cm wall for Barrow Kunda Lower Basic school.

The project is a self-help initiative (tesito) undertaken by the community of Barrow Kunda and Beakangang Kafo with support from Friends of Gambian Schools (FROGS) a UK charity in the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Manneh applauded Beakanyang and their partners for the initiative. He said that when completed the fence would provide security to the school and its inhabitants such as flowers, plants and the garden.

For his part, Mr. Nfamara Jawneh, Secretary General of Beakanyang, reiterated his organizations commitment to complementing government efforts in the education sector in rural Gambia. He encouraged the community of Barrow Kunda and all those who share the school to actively participate in the implementation of the project.

Mr. Jawneh described FROGS as true and genuine friends of Gambian schools. Jawneh encouraged the parents to keep sending their children to school.

Oustass Yahya Sumareh, board chairman of Beakanyang, appealed to the government, NGOs and philanthropists to provide them with more funds for a successful implementation of the project. It will be expensive in light of the length of the fence.

Other speakers include Alkalo Foday Barrow, PTA Chairman Lancho Barrow, VDC Chairman Karamo Touray and lady President Matta Fatty. The occasion was chaired by Mr. Ebrima Touray head teacher of the school while Alkali Kebbeh of Beakanyang delivered the vote of thanks.

In attendance were cultural groups, Beakanyang volunteers, board members and cross section of Barrow Kunda community.

Meanwhile, those interested in supporting the project either in cash or kind can contact the organization on 00220 9868882 or email to beakanyang@yahoo.com
