The national coordinator of Network Against Gender Based Violence (NGBV), Haddy Mboge-Barrow, has revealed that from 2014 to 2017, they registered 1,576 reported cases of gender based violence, with 674 sexual violence cases mainly against children.

She said this year marks the 26th year of the 16 days of Activism campaign against GBV, initiated in 1991 by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership.

The global theme for this year was: “Orange the World: #HearMeToo.” In line with the global theme, the NGBV’s theme for the celebration was: “Orange The Gambia: #HearMeToo.”

She also vowed to put those practicing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and those accused of rape cases before court to face the law.

Mariama Johm, the advocacy and campaign manager of NGBV, said violence increased more against girls under 18 years. She added that their own relatives mostly cause it. “We are sponsoring a girl who was pregnant by her own father and the family abandoned her.”

Fallu Sowe, the project coordination expressed similar concerns, adding that they will keep raising the awareness of the communities.
